A Tybee Island vacation rental with a private dock

The dock sits on the tidal marsh behind the house in Spanish Hammock, the quiet residential pocket on the north end of the island. Lazaretto Creek and the marsh are a few steps from the back door, and the walk to the water is a short boardwalk, not a trip down the street.

It is yours for the stay. You can drink coffee out there before anyone else is awake, watch the herons and egrets working the marsh, and come back after dinner when the light goes soft over the grass. The soaking tub in the primary bath and the breakfast nook off the kitchen both look toward the dock, so even the indoor mornings have a view of the water.

The dock is stocked with three kayaks: a tandem, a fishing kayak, and a single. That covers a couple paddling together, someone who wants to drift with a line in the water, and a solo paddler who wants an hour to themselves.

The honest caveat is the tide. This is a working tidal creek, and the dock goes dry at low tide. Paddling from it is easy at the right water level and a matter of waiting at the wrong one. We suggest looking at a tide chart before you plan a paddle, and if you would rather not, ask us and we will tell you what the water is likely to be doing during your dates.

The same rule shapes the rest of your day. Marsh kayaking, the trip out to Little Tybee, and using our own dock are all much easier at the right tide, so it helps to build the plan around the water and let the meals fall in around it.

There is room to park a boat on the property, and the driveway can take a boat trailer as long as you allow for fewer cars alongside it. The launch is the public boat ramp on Lazaretto Creek, about two miles away.

We would rather set expectations plainly: the dock is a genuine asset for crabbing, a kayak put-in, or tying up a boat for the week. It is not a shortcut to Hilton Head or Daufuskie, which are a drive, the same as they are for everyone else.

If you want a guide, the outing we recommend most is a kayak trip to Little Tybee Island, an uninhabited preserve just south of Tybee that you can only reach by water. Pack water shoes for creek and sandbar days, because oyster shells are sharp, and bring binoculars for the porch. When you are not on the water, the beach, the lighthouse, and the pier are all a short drive away.
