A Tybee Island family rental with room for every generation
We are a young family ourselves, and we bought this house as the place we would want to gather with our own family and friends. It is a home on a quiet street, and it suits families and multigenerational groups who want space, water, and quiet, with enough beds, enough rooms to retreat to, and something for the kids to do.
Room to spread out
The house sleeps up to 10 guests. the rooms are a mix: a primary suite with a king bed, two guest bedrooms with king beds, a bunk room with two sets of bunk beds, and a twin room where each bed has a trundle beneath it. The bunk room has a connecting door to the primary suite, which suits parents with younger children. A pull-out sofa in the game room handles overflow.
Meals are easy to manage together. The kitchen is stocked for a proper dinner, the dining table seats eight, and the back porch has two four-seat dining sets and a propane grill for the nights nobody wants to leave the house. Linens and towels are provided, and there is a laundry room for the days the beach comes home with you.
Something for the kids to do at the house
Off the garage gym is a secret room we call the kids' hideout: blue and colorful, with hanging swings, monkey bars, a rock wall, a Lego table, and a chalk wall. It is where children disappear for an hour and come back rearranged.
The game room is the rainy-day answer, and adults will find it just as useful once the kids are asleep. It has a 75-inch TV, a Texas Hold'em table, a dartboard, cornhole, a foosball table, an Xbox One, a PS4, a Wii U, and a deep stack of card and board games, plus DVDs and Blu-rays. Whoever is up early can work out in the garage gym, which has a treadmill, an exercise bike, an elliptical, and a bench with adjustable dumbbells.
Outside, and on the island
The backyard has a fire pit, and the s'mores kit we can set out before you arrive serves ten, which suits a full house. The marsh and the creek are a few steps away, and the dock has kayaks, though the dock is tide-dependent and goes dry at low tide, so watch the water level with children.
The island itself is easy with kids. The Tybee Island Marine Science Center has touch tanks, sea turtles, and guided beach walks, and it is a family favorite, though it is typically closed on Tuesdays. The Crab Shack has an alligator lagoon, the lighthouse and North Beach are a short drive, and Savannah's Historic District is about thirty minutes away.
One honest note for grandparents
The house is elevated with two sets of stairs and no elevator, so it is not wheelchair accessible and may be hard for guests with limited mobility. It works well for most families, and if someone in your group has needs we should know about, tell us and we will help you plan.
